The quote “Show me five of your friends and I will tell you who you are” is far cry from the truth. They could be people who were just fun to hang around with. If you really want to know someone you can almost paint a picture by looking at what he/she reads. The most productive way to broaden your mind is to read a book. So I sort out a list of books that are good reads and pretty much motivational — it is an in-ordered list, as each book delivers its own kind of interest and joyful reading. Also, feel free to scrutinize and suggest books that should have made it to the list.
10. How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman
9. Honeymoon with My Brother by Franz Wisner
This book is not only a good read but a good motivational book too. Imagine having a good job and fiancée! Some would say this was the perfect life. He gets dumped weeks to his wedding and gets fired. Read how Franz Wisner made the best of a bad situation.
8. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
The story of David Copperfield in this book gives it a spot on the list of books everyone should read. The trials this young boy goes through from losing his mother to living with his stepfather and sister who mistreat him. This book is a simple read and the characters in the book bring out the story well.
7. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
This book is a personal favorite of mine without a doubt maybe because of the relevance of the story. It tells a story about a family going through the great depression and their struggle to survive. A story I think many of us can relate to I presume.

6. The Beach by Alex Garland
This book tells of a traveler (Richard) who is given a map to some hidden beach and together with some friends he meets they set out to find this beach. A well narrated story, you can actually picture the beach from the how it is described. This book inspired the 2000 blockbuster movie ‘The Beach’
5. The Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
The heart likes what it likes and this could not be better described than in this book. The story is about a man who (though seen as a disorder) travels through time and his wife having to deal his long absence. His inability to control his time travels I guess is what makes it a disorder but a great story.
4. Men are from Mars Women are from Venus by John Gray
3. To Kill the Mockingbird by Harper Lee
I have come across many negative reviews about this book but it still doesn’t take away the great story line. It tells the story of a lawyer Atticus, who is appointed to defend a black American accused of raping a white woman.
2. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
For the entrepreneurial people out there, this has to be one book you ought to have close to heart. It has great advice on social skills but don’t take my word for it, since its release How to win friends and influence people, has sold more than 15 million copies. Go figure.
1. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
The Old Man and the Sea by Enest Hemingway is a classic piece that not only depict the character of the poor fisherman who struggle against nature but also brings the embedded emotions as the story continues. After reading it, you’ll realize the true sense of human existence and his fight against all the odds that comes along the way.
