The 2013 Maui Invitational Tournament
The 2013 Invitational, which is the 30th anniversary of the tournament, starts November 15 with the first two games in the opening round of play. Eleven of the participating 12 teams will play one game from November 15-19 to kick off the tournament. These games have no bearing on participation in the Championship Round.
The games for the Opening Round are:
Oakland vs. California
Louisiana vs. Arkansas
St. Francis Brooklyn vs. Dayton
Oakland vs. Gonzaga
Louisiana vs. Baylor
St. Francis Brooklyn vs. Syracuse
Coastal Carolina vs. Minnesota
The Regional Round will take place November 23-24 at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina. The round starts with two games on November 23, played between teams who participated in the Opening Round of the tournament but who are not invited to the Championship Round in Maui. St. Francis Brooklyn will play Coastal Carolina and Oakland will play Louisiana. The winners and losers of each game will play each other the following day.
The Championship Round starts November 25 and ends November 27. It is hosted at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii. Host school Chaminade joins the remaining seven schools from the Opening Round. There is both a winner’s bracket and a consolation bracket, so each team is guaranteed three games in the Championship Round.
The first day games of the 2013 Championship Round are:
Arkansas vs. California
Minnesota vs. Syracuse
Chaminade vs. Baylor
Dayton vs. Gonzaga
History of the Tournament
The Maui Invitational Tournament first started in 1984, two years after Chaminade University of Honolulu defeated the University of Virginia in what is often considered the biggest upset in the history of college basketball. At the time, Chaminade was a little known National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school while UVA was a NCAA powerhouse and, going into the game at Chaminade, was undefeated.
After Chaminade’s victory, the head coach for UVA suggested that the school start a tournament in Hawaii, giving birth to the Maui Classic.
Over time, the tournament has become the best known in-season tournament for NCAA men’s basketball.
EA Sports, a brand of Electronic Arts that develops sports video games, has been the title sponsor of the tournament since 2011. Hawaiian Airlines is the “Official Airline” of the tournament through 2014, and the official travel agency is O’ahu Travel. Other tournament sponsors include the Maui Visitors Bureau, County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation, Hawaii Tourism Authority, adidas and Geico.
The host hotels for the tournament are the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa and Westin Maui Resort & Spa.
Betting on the Maui Invitational
Before you place your bets for the Maui Invitational, consider: Since the tournament is so early in the season, you really won’t have a good chance to scout any of the teams before the games start. Research the rosters. See which teams are returning the most starters or veterans. See what teams have played in the tournament before and what their success has been. For example, Chaminade has only won seven games in the history of the tournament, once you are ready to bet Allpro is worth having a look at.
